CHAPTER SIXTEEN

JOE

I was still trying to hold on to the excitement of tomorrow amongst the worry when Layton threw the next thing at me.

“I have something for you.”

My first thought was, I didn’t want it, whatever it was. I was becoming an ungrateful shit. I couldn’t create excitement so I tried for surprised.

“Me?”

He smiled and nodded. He leaned over and got something from his pocket and then held it out to me. I looked at it. I looked at it for more than was acceptable, which probably looked ungrateful but I just didn’t know what to do with it. It was a mobile phone. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would ever have one and then I hauled my thoughts back, my dreams, if I had them, never went beyond the alley.

Still staring at it, my thoughts then moved on from, oh shit, to I didn’t need one. I had no one to call, no friends, hell, I didn’t even know anyone with a phone to call. There was also the fact that I wouldn’t even know how to use it.

“You can take it, Joe, it’s yours.”

I felt silly. I was just staring at it.

“I’m… I’m sorry, thank you. I don’t think I need it though. I really don’t have anyone to call.”

Layton smiled more and continued to offer it. “Your life is also different here. It’s not just about Leo, you are no longer alone. While you reside in this house, you are part of this family and this family likes to keep in touch and share its ups and downs. The other Keepers like to share their lives with each other, where they’ve been, what their slave has been doing, any gossip they heard while on a visit, possible clients. You will need to speak to Bea or Hazel if Leo is not planning to eat or leave his room for any reason and most importantly, you will be able to contact me at any time. I have programmed a few numbers for you already. Mine, of course, Kendal’s, Bea’s, Julian’s...”

I looked from the phone back to him. “Julian?” Why?

He sort of laughed. “You never know when you may need a friend, Joe, and despite your misgivings about him, he is someone who you can trust. All my Keepers have his number.”

“Do they ever ring him?”

“Not as far as I know, no.”

Surely then, that told him something? If I had to move a dead body, I’d rather ask Bea than him!

“I think there might be a reason for that.”

He laughed at me as I sighed, then took the phone and looked at it. I couldn’t see a keypad or anything where I would even dial any number.

I bit my lip and then relented and said something. “I don’t know how to use it.”

I thought he was going to think of me as stupid or laugh or something but he merely nodded and sat forward with his arms around me, putting his hand over mine holding the phone.
